About Justicia gendarussa Plant :

  • Habit : An erect, branched, evergreen herb.
  • Stem : Quadrangular, thickened at and above the nodes and internodes
  • Leaves : Simple, opposite, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, acute at base, tapering into rounded apex and glabrous and shining with prominent purple veins beneath.
  • Inflorescence : Terminal or axillary spikes.
  • Flowers : Irregular, bisexual, sessile, white with pink or purple spots inside and red in the throat and lip.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : November - January
  • Significance :
    • It is useful in asthma, rheumatism and colics of children.
    • It may have the potential to be the basis for a birth control pill for men.
    • The leaves are useful in muscle pains, broken or fractured bones, muscle sprains and cuts.
    • A decoction of the twigs is used as a herbal bath during childbirth.
