  • Botanical Name : Xanthium strumarium L.
  • Synonyms : Xanthium indicum DC.
  • Common Name : Common Cocklebur, Broad Bur, Gadariyun
  • Plant Family : Asteraceae (Compositae)
  • According to the Rules of ICBN the names of the families should end in -aceae. Thus the new name for the family Compositae became Asteraceae. However, the name Compositae is also exempted and conserved under 'Nomina Conservanda' because of their constant use for a long time.

About Xanthium strumarium Plant :

  • Habit : An erect annual gregarious herb or undershrub.
  • Leaves : Numerous, entire or somewhat lobed hairy on both sides.
  • Flowers : Inconspicuous, yellow, the involucral of fertile heads ovoid in fruit, spinous all over, with two large hooked spines at the apex.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : October onwards.
  • Significance :
    • In the form of a decoction it is administered in cases of long-standing malaria.
    • The leaves are given in the form of a decoction in the treatment of skin diseases.
