About Melia azedarach Plant :

  • Habit : A large tree.
  • Leaves : Imparipinnate, leaflets 3-11, ovate acute, serrate, oblique.
  • Flowers : Fragrant, lilac, in long axillary panicles, staminal tube purple.
  • Fruit : Drupe ellipsoid, 4-seeded.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : April-May
  • Significance :
    • It is considered to have deobstruent, resolvent and alexipharmic properties.
    • The flowers and leaves are applied as a poultice to relieve nervous headaches.
    • The juice of the leaves, administered internally, is said to be anthelminthic, antilithic, diuretic, and emmenagogue, and is thought to relieve cold swellings.
