  • Botanical Name : Sporobolus helvolus (Trin.) T. Durand & Schinz
  • Synonyms : Vilfa helvola Trin.
  • Plant Family : Poaceae (Gramineae)
  • According to the Rules of ICBN the names of the families should end in -aceae. Thus the new name for the family Gramineae became Poaceae. However, the name Gramineae is also exempted and conserved under 'Nomina Conservanda' because of their constant use for a long time.

About Sporobolus helvolus Plant :

  • Habit : A perennial grass with stems densely tufted, leafy, nodes glabrous.
  • Leaves : Narrowed from a subcordate base to an acuminate tip, strict, glaucous, flat or undulate, not pungent, sheaths ribbed, glabrous, ligule a line of hairs.
  • Inflorescence and Flowers :
    • Panicle contracted, interrupted, pale yellowish-white, branches short, erect.
    • Spikelets crowded, 0.2 cm long, pedicels very short.
    • Glumes 3, lower involucral glume 0.15 cm long, lanceolate, hyaline, acutely acuminate, 1-nerved, upper involucral glume 0.2 cm long, broader than the lower, ovate-lanceolate, acutely acuminate, hyaline, one-nerved, floral glume 0.15 cm long, ovate, acute, 1-nerved, palea as long as the glume.
    • Stamens 3, filaments very short, anthers 0.08 cm long.
