About Spermacoce articularis Plant :

  • Habit : A procumbent herb in which the branches bearing the inflorescence are at times erect, in dense growth the whole plant is erect, hispidly hairy in younger parts.
  • Leaves : Oblong or elliptic, pubescent, scabrid, acute, margins ciliate and scabrid, stipules membranous with a few bristles which are generally longer than the sheath.
  • Flowers : Occassionally white, more often pink or pale lilac, several in a whorl within the stipular cup and therefore axillary, sub-sessile, corolla generally shorter.
  • Fruit : Capsule, oblong, apiculate. 
  • Seeds : Seeds half-ellipsoid, rounded at both ends or one end rounded the other somewhat truncate, the inner side flat with a deep groove all along the middle, surface finely granulate.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : August - January
  • Significance : The seeds are used as a substitute for coffee.
