About Celosia spicata Plant :

  • Habit : A small, annual, erect herb with grooved stem.
  • Leaves : Alternate,linear-lanceolate, acute, entire, base tapering into the petiole.
  • Inflorescence : Terminal spikes.
  • Flowers :
    • Pinkish at first gradually becoming white when old.
    • Bracteoles scarious, linear.
    • Perianth 1-5, scarious, linear-lanceolate.
    • Stamens 5, filaments united at the base to form a cup.
    • Ovary superior, one-celled, style slender.
  • Fruit : Capsule (Ptyxis) dehisce transversely with 4-8, flat seeds.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : September-December
  • Significance :
    • Common in grass after rains everywhere.
    • The seeds are useful in diarrhoea.
