About Corchorus capsularis Plant :

  • Habit : An annual much-branched herb with glabrous stem and branches.
  • Leaves : Lanceolate, acute, serrate, base round or acute, base prolonged into a filiform appendage on each side, stipules filiform, petioles long.
  • Inflorescence : Cymose
  • Flower :
    • Pedicellate, small yellow, in short cymes of 10-2 pedicels.
    • Sepals and petals 4-5.
    • Stamens many, ovary 2-5 celled.
  • Fruits : Capsules globose, not beaked, depressed, broader than long, ridged and muricated, 5-valved, valves woody without transverse septa, seeds few, wedge-shaped, smooth, brown.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : September
  • Significance : It is the well-known Gunny or "Jute" plant grown for its fibre of commerce.
