About Coriandrum sativum Plant :

  • Habit : A small, strong smelling, annual herb.
  • Leaves : Dimorphic, the lower ones petioled, imparipinnatisect into 2-3 pairs of ovate-cuneiform, obtuse, incised-dentate, segments, decompound, the upper ones short petioled or subsessile, 2-3 pinnatisect into linear, filiform lobes.
  • Flowers :
    • Small, white or slightly bluish, in compound umbels of 5-10 rays, involucre 0, involucel usually of 3, short linear-lanceolate bracts.
    • Calyx teeth small, often unequal.Petals 5, obovate, emarginate.
    • Stamens 5, epigynous.Ovary inferior, sub-globose.
  • Fruit : A cremocarp, sub-globose, mericarps concave-convex, not ribbed.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : November - December
  • Significance :
    • It is generally cultivated for its leaves and fruits.
    • The leaves are used as flavouring agent in cooking and for chatni.
    • The fruits are used as carminative, tonic and useful in dysentery.
