  • Habit : A perennial herb with thick root stalk.
  • Leaves : Large, oblong-lanceolate, hairy below with long petioles.
  • Inflorescence : Loose spikes or panicles.
  • Flowers :
    • Few, bracteates, bracts linear, persistent.
    • Calyx tubular, persistent, corolla yellow, tube cylindric, exserted.
    • Stamen 1, lateral staminodes teeth like.
    • Labellum obovate, white tinged purple.
    • Ovary inferior, 3-celled.
  • Fruits : Capsule angled, sub-globose, yellowish white, with many fine vertical seeds many, angled black.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : January-February
  • Significance : Cultivated for its seeds used as spice, seasoning condiment and in medicine.
