About Zingiber officinale Plant :

  • Habit : A small herb with horizontal, fleshy rhizomes.
  • Leaves : Distichous, linear, lanceolate.
  • Flowers :
    • Flowers in long spikes, bracts, one-flowered.
    • Calyx and cotolla tubular segments 3+3.
    • Stamen one, purple, labellum 3-lobed, purple.
    • Ovary inferior, 3-celled, stigma funnel-shaped.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : March - April
  • Significance :
    • Extensively cultivated everywhere for tis fleshy rhizome which is aromatic and used in masala daily.
    • The dried rhizomes are powdered and used as condiment and in medicine for chest diseases.
