Habit :
A small herb with horizontal, fleshy rhizomes.
Leaves :
Distichous, linear, lanceolate.
Flowers :
Flowers in long spikes, bracts, one-flowered.
Calyx and cotolla tubular segments 3+3.
Stamen one, purple, labellum 3-lobed, purple.
Ovary inferior, 3-celled, stigma funnel-shaped.
Flowering and Fruiting Time :
March - April
Significance :
Extensively cultivated everywhere for tis fleshy rhizome which is aromatic and used in masala daily.
The dried rhizomes are powdered and used as condiment and in medicine for chest diseases.
