About Cyperus exaltatus Plant :

  • Habit : A large glabrous sedge with no stolons, root-fibres stout, stems obtusely trigonous.
  • Leaves : Few, longer or shorter than the stem, linear, finely acuminate, 1-nerved, multistriate, with more or less scaberulous margins.
  • Inflorescence and Flowers :
    • Umbel compound, rays 5-10, bracts 3-6, leaf-like.
    • Spikelets ascending, narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, chestnut-brown, much compressed, 8-16 flowered.
    • Glumes closely imbricate ovate-oblong, mucronate.
    • Stamens 3, anthers 0.1 cm long, yellow.
    • Stigmas 3, rather shorter than the style, capillary, exserted.
  • Fruit : Nut ellipsoid, tapering to both ends, trigonous, brown or yellow.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : September onwards.
  • Significance : Useful for paper making.
