About Nyctanthes arbortristis Plant :

  • Habit : A small tree.
  • Leaves : Opposite, broadly ovate, acuminate, rough above with stiff hairs from bulbous bases, hairy beneath, entire, petiolate.
  • Inflorescence : Axillary and in short terminal cymes.
  • Flowers :
    • White, fragrant in the evening.
    • Calyx hairy outside.
    • Corolla tube orange coloured, lobes white.
  • Fruit : Capsule up to 18 mm long and broad, compressed, obcordate.
  • Flowering and Fruiting Time : August onwards.
  • Significance :
    • The leaves are used in fevers and rheumatism.
    • The leaves have been proved effective in malaria.
    • The dry leaves are used as fine sand-paper.
